Core Curriculum Development Update
02/13/2015Core Summary
03/26/2015The Core is composed of 13 competencies organized into 3 modules and more deeply connected by more than a dozen components. These varying degrees of organization are in place to encourage organic discovery. Let’s talk about the broad categories first: Modules.
Modules
The Core has been designed to allow you to discover various competencies based on what you need to do in your in court management role.
Starting from the Core, you’ll see there are several ways to enter into the competencies.
The All Modules page allows you to get an overview of the entire Core framed in a traditional outline.
If you scroll down a bit, you’ll see that modules get a bit of introduction and then an invitation to explore each module on its own page: Principle, Practice, and Vision.
The modules are the best way to get an overall view on how the competencies are organized. Once you’re a bit more familiar with the structure, you might find it’s easier to browse all 13 competencies in one view. The default presentation of that view is a grid which shows the titles of the competencies in tiles with icons that correspond to the modules and short description of each competency.
At the top of the competency grid, you’ll see some additional options. On the left side, you can sort the overall list down to individual modules. On the right, you can switch between the grid and a list view. While the site is optimized for a solid mobile experience, in some settings a simple text-based interface is best. You decide which is best.
Components
Once you’ve jumped into a competency, you’ll notice a list of components on the right hand side (near the end of the page, if you look at it on a smaller screen). Components are a way that we fine tuned the organization of the competencies. They’re a way of seeing related competencies to a particular discipline beyond the borders of modules. Take the Communication component—it’s a way of seeing every competency that involves communication, regardless of the modules to which they are assigned.
The best way to discover these connections is by browsing the competencies themselves.
Related Competencies
One more way of working your way through the competencies is near the bottom of each one: Related Competencies. Each competency has one or two, curated, related competencies. These are competencies that share great deal in common with the one you’re viewing.
Stay Up to Date
The Core is a dynamic body of work. There’s lots of work ahead and that means a great deal of updates down the road. The best way to stay in touch is to sign up for the Core News. At the bottom of every page you’ll find an easy sign up form for The Core newsletter. Right now Core News ships monthly—so it doesn’t inundate your inbox.
If social is more your thing, follow The Core on Twitter where news will be posted as it happens.
This is the second of three parts to help support the transition to the new competencies. Subscribe to our newsletter to find out when the next (and other posts) are made.
